Your skis hook at the top of the turn or feel vague when you tip them. Two tiny numbers set that feel. Base bevel controls how quickly the edge engages. Side edge angle controls how hard it grips once engaged. Get them right and the ski feels predictable in soft and firm. Get them wrong and every run feels like work.

What Base Bevel Does

Base bevel is the slight lift of the base edge off the snow, measured in degrees. Low bevel means quick bite. High bevel means you tip farther before bite, so the ski pivots easier and feels less catchy.

Common Base Bevels

  • 0.5 degree: Race stock for hard snow. Very quick, very unforgiving. Most rec skiers find it grabby.
  • 1.0 degree: Factory default for most all mountain and freeride skis. Balanced initiation and forgiveness. Start here.
  • 1.5 to 2.0 degree: Park and beginner friendly. Slow to engage, easy to slide. You gain forgiveness, lose grip.

Hooky at turn start usually means base bevel too low or uneven. Vague and needing big ankle tip usually means base bevel too high or bases not flat. What Side Edge Angle Does

Side angle is how sharp the edge is once engaged. 90 deg side equals 0 deg side bevel. 88 equals 2 deg bevel. 87 equals 3 deg bevel. Shops talk in side angle. Tuners talk in side bevel. Same thing.

More side bevel, 88 or 87, is more acute and grips hard snow better. Less bevel, 90 or 89, is more durable and less twitchy.

Common Side Angles

  • 90 deg: Most durable, least grippy. Rental level.
  • 89 deg: Tough, forgiving, good for wide freeride skis in soft snow.
  • 88 deg: Standard for all mountain. Grip without a razor that folds fast.
  • 87 deg: Frontside and hard snow bias. Best grip on firm, dulls fastest.

The Combos That Work

  • 1.0 base / 88 side: Workhorse for the West. Easy to pivot in trees and moguls, grippy on morning corduroy. If you own one setup, make it this.
  • 1.0 base / 87 side: Firm snow bias. Better hold on refrozen and wind buff.
  • 1.5 base / 88 side: Park and playful. Less catch on takeoffs, still enough bite to carve out.
  • 0.7 base / 87 side: Technical carving and race. Precise, not forgiving if you are back.
  • 1.0 base / 89 side: Wide powder skis you want loose in soft snow and crud.

How to Tell What You Have

Symptom check: Hookiness that throws you inside points to too little base bevel or a hanging burr. Vague delayed grip points to too much base bevel or base high skis.

Sharpie test: Color the edge black, take one light pass with a sharp file in a guide at your target angle. If marker disappears evenly, that angle matches. If only part disappears, you have a different angle.

True bar: Lay a true bar across bases and hold to light. Light under center is concave. Light under edges is base high. Either makes numbers meaningless until flat.

How to Maintain Without Overdoing It

Most skiers ruin edges by filing the base edge every tune. Do not. Base edges only need a light kiss every few tunes. Side edges are where maintenance belongs.

  1. Use guides: Dedicated 88 or 87 side guide and 1 degree base guide. Freehand fails.
  2. Side first: One or two passes with a fine file if needed, then 2 to 4 passes with a diamond stone in the guide to polish.
  3. Base only if needed: One ultra light pass with a 1 degree base bevel guide only if you feel a burr. Then deburr at 45 deg tip to tail with a gummy.
  4. Wax after: Wax after sharpening to protect the fresh edge.

When to Get a Shop Reset

Get a shop grind if bases are railed or base high, if angles are unknown after many hand tunes, if you have deep rock burrs, or if you are changing angles significantly. The grinder flattens and sets a clean angle in one pass. Otherwise, home touch ups every 3 to 6 days on firm snow with diamonds are faster and save metal.
