The 2026-27 Parking Rules, One Canyon

Alta requires parking reservations on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holiday periods for 2026-27. Note the 1 p.m. cutoff on that preferred pass. If you ski into the afternoon, which you will, you need to be out of the preferred lot or face enforcement. Read the map when you buy: the preferred lots are marked purple, and the free green zones remain free all season.

The UTA Ski Bus Game Plan

The cheapest and lowest-stress way up the canyon is the UTA Ski Bus. It runs from park-and-ride lots in the valley straight to Snowbird and Alta, and Alta season pass holders, including Alta-Bird pass holders, ride free for the 2026-27 winter season just by presenting their pass.

The bus earns its keep on powder days. When SR-210 has traction laws or closes for avalanche control, buses often get priority movement or at least skip the parking reservation problem entirely. You do not need a reservation to ride the bus, which means a storm Saturday that is sold out for parking is still very much skiiable if you ride from the park-and-ride.

Downsides are honest. The bus runs on a schedule, it can fill up at peak times, and you lose the flexibility to bail on a slow morning. Pack your bag the night before, check the UTA ski service schedule, and give yourself a bus earlier than you think you need.

Driving: Traction, Closures, and Timing

If you drive, winter tires or chains are effectively mandatory during storms. SR-210 has traction laws that UDOT enforces, and canyon closures for avalanche control happen regularly, especially after overnight dumps. Check UDOT traffic conditions before you leave, not when you are already in the canyon.

Timing matters as much as equipment. On reservation days at Alta, lots fill by the time lifts open. At Snowbird, the free lots go early on powder weekends. The common local pattern is simple: arrive by 8 a.m., or ride the bus, or ski the afternoon. Leaving the valley at 9:30 on a powder Saturday is how you end up watching the road close from a gas station.

A Powder Day Checklist

• Night before: Book or confirm your parking reservation, pack the car, check the forecast and UDOT conditions.
• 5:30 to 6:00 a.m.: Final call on drive vs. bus. If it dumped overnight and you have no reservation, commit to the bus.
