Ski bindings are the least glamorous part of your setup until they matter most. They hold you in when you need power, let go when you need safety, and set the feel of every turn in between. Yet most skiers buy them as an afterthought. whatever the shop had in the right brake width.

After years of swapping bindings between Wasatch daily drivers and travel skis, here’s a practical breakdown of what actually matters, how to match bindings to boots and skis, and what to check in July so you’re not scrambling in November.

What Ski Bindings Actually Do (and Don’t Do)

An alpine binding does two jobs:

  1. Transmit power. When you tip your boots, the binding drives the ski edge.
  2. Release safely. In a twisting or forward fall, it lets go before your tibia or knee takes the full load.

What it doesn’t do is make you a better skier or prevent all injuries. Release is a calibrated compromise. too low and you pre-release in chop, too high and it won’t release when it should. That calibration is DIN, and it’s set to you, not the ski.

DIN: What Those Numbers Mean

DIN (technically ISO 11088) is a release-force scale from ~0.75 to 18. The number on your heel piece corresponds to the torque required to release. Most recreational skiers live between 5 and 10.

How DIN Is Actually Set

A shop uses a chart that accounts for:

  • Height and weight
  • Age (over 50 gets a step down)
  • Boot sole length in mm (stamped on the heel of your boot)
  • Skier type I / II / III. honest self-assessment of speed and aggression

Type I: cautious, slower speeds, prefers lower release force.
Type II: moderate, mixed terrain.
Type III: aggressive, fast, steep terrain and bigger features.

Don’t copy your friend’s DIN. Two skiers at 7 can have completely different settings once boot sole length and weight are factored. And never set it yourself with a screwdriver. release testing requires a calibrated machine at a shop.

Brake Width. The 5mm Rule

Your brake arms need to clear the ski edges without dragging. Rule of thumb:

  • Brake width should be 5-15mm wider than your ski waist width.
  • Too narrow: brakes catch on the sidewall and won’t deploy.
  • Too wide: you hook brakes on the other ski and catch in traverses.

Examples:

  • 88mm all-mountain ski → 90mm or 95mm brake
  • 98mm daily driver → 100mm or 105mm brake
  • 106mm+ powder ski → 110mm or 115mm brake

Brakes are swappable on many models like the Tyrolia Attack and Look Pivot, but some are not. If you’re between sizes, go slightly wider rather than bending a narrow brake aggressively. that weakens the arms.

Boot Sole Compatibility: Alpine, GripWalk, MN, and Touring

This is where most July buyers get tripped up.

  • Alpine ISO 5355: Classic flat, hard-plastic sole. Found on older race and performance boots. Only works with Alpine-only bindings unless the binding is marked MN or GW-compatible.
  • GripWalk ISO 23223: Rockered, rubbery lug sole for walking. Now standard on 90% of new all-mountain boots. Requires a GripWalk-compatible binding. look for “GW” on the toe. Most 2024+ bindings are GW.
  • MN (Multi-Norm): Typically Marker GripWalk/Alpine/Touring compatible, but check the list. Salomon/Atomic/Armada’s MN is GripWalk + Alpine, not touring pins.
  • Touring ISO 9523 / Pin: Touring boots with tech fittings need a touring or hybrid binding (Marker Duke PT, Salomon Shift, Cast). Pure alpine bindings will not work.

Check the underside of your boot for the ISO stamp and the binding toe for its badge. If they don’t match, no shop will. or should. adjust it for you.

How to Pick Bindings for Your Setup

Skip marketing. Use this:

1. Match the DIN Range to You

You want your ideal DIN near the middle of the binding’s range, not at the edge. Springs are most consistent in the mid-50%.

  • If you ride at DIN 6-7: a 4-12 binding is perfect
  • If you ride at DIN 9-10: look at 6-13 or 8-15
  • DIN over 11 consistently: you’re in Pivot 15 / STH2 16 territory

2. Weight Matters More Than You Think

Heavier bindings (Pivot 15, STH2 13) dampen vibration and drive harder skis, but add swing weight. Lighter (Strive 14, Attack 11 GW) are easier touring-adjacent and park-friendly.

3. Elastic Travel and Retention

Look Pivot series is famous for 45mm elastic travel in the heel. it absorbs chatter without releasing. Marker Griffon and Tyrolia Attack use a more traditional vertical/horizontal spring but with great recentering. If you ski firm afternoon refreeze at speed, elastic travel prevents those annoying pre-releases.

Mount Point and Why It Matters

Factory recommended is where most skiers should stay. it balances float and carving. Going +1 to +2 cm forward makes the ski feel shorter and quicker in trees, but reduces tip pressure for carving. Going back -1 cm adds stability for fast, open terrain.

If you’re mounting new skis this summer, talk to your tech about your boot’s flex and forward lean too. More upright boots feel more centered at recommended; aggressive forward lean wants to stay on the line or slightly back.

July Binding Check: 4 Things to Do Before Winter

You can do this in the garage in July:

  1. Clean toe wings and AFD. Use a dry brush, then check the AFD (Anti-Friction Device) moves smoothly. Cracked or gummed AFDs are a release-risk item.
  2. Check brake retraction. Click boots in, then out. brakes should snap fully out and not drag. Bend from a rock strike may prevent full deployment.
  3. Look for play. Boot clicked in, try to wiggle heel side-to-side. A few mm is normal on some designs, but clunking or lifting suggests worn heels.
  4. Schedule a release test. Shops calibrate in October. With new boots or any slider replacement, book early. shops get slammed once Little Cottonwood opens.

What DIN should I ski at?

There is no universal “correct” DIN. It’s set from a chart using height, weight, age, boot sole length, and skier type. A shop must test release with your boots. Start with an honest skier type. Type I, II, or III. and never raise DIN to solve a technique or fit issue.

Can I use GripWalk boots with old bindings?

Only if the binding is marked GripWalk-compatible. Alpine-only toes don’t have the height adjustment or AFD shape for GripWalk’s rockered sole, so release can be inconsistent or fail. Check the toe badge for “GW” or “MN” before you buy.

What brake width do I need?
