Most pre releases and no releases come from three small things that drift over the summer. DIN gets bumped in storage, forward pressure slips a click after a remount or a hard eject, and boot soles wear enough to change how your binding holds. None of them look dramatic in the garage, but they change how your ski lets go when you need it to.

This is a practical check for 2026-27 you can do in ten minutes before you head to a shop for the official test. You will not replace a calibrated release test, but you will catch the problems that cause most early season surprises.

Why these three checks matter more than a DIN chart photo

Bindings have two jobs. Hold you in when you want to stay in, and let you out when forces get unsafe. DIN is only one input to that. Forward pressure controls how much contact the heel and toe have through flex, and sole condition controls friction and interface height. If either is off, even a correct DIN number will not behave correctly.

Check 1: DIN is not a skill rating

What DIN actually controls

DIN is a standardized release value, not a skier type. It sets the torque required to open the toe and heel. Heavier, taller, older, or more aggressive skiers generate more leverage, so they need a higher release value to avoid pre release. The chart uses height, weight, age, boot sole length, and skier type to find a starting point.

Two common mistakes show up in August. First, riders bump DIN because a ski popped off once in heavy snow. Second, they lower DIN because a friend said lower is safer. Both miss the root cause. Heavy Wasatch snow can pry a ski off at low speed if forward pressure is low or if the toe has ice or dirt in it. Cranking DIN hides that and raises injury risk.

How to set a sane baseline

Look at your current DIN windows on both skis. Are left and right the same. Is toe and heel the same number on each binding. If not, you have a clue that someone adjusted one piece after an incident.

Use your boot sole length in millimeters, not your shoe size, to find the chart row. Boot sole length is stamped on the heel or outside of the boot. If you changed boots since last season, your old DIN may no longer be right even if you are the same skier. Shorter sole length needs more DIN for the same torque, longer needs less. That surprises people who went from a 305 mm alpine sole to a 295 mm GripWalk sole.

Check 2: Forward pressure and why your heel feels loose

What forward pressure does

Forward pressure pushes the boot into the toe cup so the binding stays in contact when the ski flexes. Too little forward pressure and you get slop, rattling, and late releases that feel like a pre release. Too much and the binding cannot flex, which also affects release and can damage the track.

Forward pressure changes when you move a binding on the track for a new boot, when screws settle, or when you swap between two pairs of boots with slightly different sole lengths. It is the most overlooked adjustment on used skis you bought this summer.

How to read the indicator on common bindings

Most modern bindings have a simple indicator.

  • Marker Royal and Griffon: A small scribe line or arrow on the heel housing should sit in the middle of the grooved range when the boot is clicked in. If the line is forward of the marks, the track is too far forward. If it is behind, it is too far back.
  • Salomon STH2 and Warden: A yellow tab or line in a window should be flush or centered. Check both with boot in and clicked down fully.
  • Tyrolia Attack: A tab in a window behind the heel should be centered, not pressed to either end. Attack demos have a separate track scale, so verify the sole length mark lines up.
  • Look Pivot: Pivot has no traditional forward pressure window. The heel turns to set length, and the white indicator on the heel should sit with the arms neither splayed wide nor pinched tight. The boot should click in with firm thumb pressure and no lateral play.

Click the boot in on a flat surface. Lift the ski and try to wiggle the boot heel side to side with your hand. Any play beyond a millimeter is a sign forward pressure is low. Also check the track screws. If you see shiny rings around screw heads or the binding rocks on the ski, stop and get a remount evaluation.

Check 3: Boot sole wear that ruins release

GripWalk, Alpine, and the wear points

Bindings release by letting the boot slide across the AFD, the anti friction device. Worn soles add friction, change height, and add rocker to the interface. That changes both lateral and vertical release.

Look at four spots. The toe lug leading edge, the heel lug, the middle sole where the AFD contacts, and the toe and heel rubber pads if you have GripWalk. If the lugs are rounded, chipped, or the rubber is worn flush to the hard plastic, release friction goes up. If you can rock the boot on a flat table, the sole is worn unevenly.

Alpine DIN soles are hard plastic and last longer but get chewed by parking lots. GripWalk rubber grips better for walking but wears faster on pavement and stairs. That is normal, but you need to replace pads before they get thin.

Quick inspection routine

Do this with boots dry and clean.

  1. Set the boot on a known flat surface like a kitchen counter. Look at daylight under the sole. You should see minimal light under the middle. If you see a big gap under toe or heel, the sole is worn or warped.
  2. Run a finger across the toe and heel lugs. They should have a sharp square edge, not rounded or burred. If they feel like a worn eraser, replace or rebuild.
  3. Check AFD contact. With the boot clicked into the binding, look from the side. The sole should sit flat on the AFD, not high off it or pressed hard into it. Many bindings have a height adjustment screw to match GripWalk versus Alpine. If yours does, set it per the manual so a business card drags with slight resistance, not freely and not locked.
  4. Inspect toe and heel rubber. If you have replaceable GripWalk pads, order the correct model for your boot. Boot brand matters. A Tecnica pad will not fit a Salomon boot.

When to go to a shop

Go to a certified shop if any of these are true. Your forward pressure indicator will not center even when the track is at the correct sole length mark. Your DIN screws feel stripped or the window numbers jump when you turn them. Your soles are worn past the wear indicator line molded into most GripWalk pads. You swapped boots or skis and the brake width, toe height, or compatibility is in question. You had a release or no release that felt wrong last season.

A shop test on a calibrated machine measures actual torque at toe and heel and checks both directions. It takes ten minutes and costs less than one new ski. Bring both boots and both skis, even if only one feels off. Shops set forward pressure, AFD height, and DIN as a system, then document it. Keep that paperwork. If you travel or rent, it helps the next tech see what changed.
